What kind of pieces are considered the most valuable or most rare at this point?
Well right now, certain fang sculptures have gone for the biggest money in auction. Tribal art sort of started out because early art dealers, mostly with the French, saw that these famous artists were so influenced by tribal art--thus [the movement] called Primitivism began. So a lot of the most sought-after pieces are ones that were owned by these early, great artists. Also, masterpieces are the most valuable and in any tribal culture. You have certain masterpieces that are just so unusual and so well done, and they’re intact, so those are the pieces that fetch the most money.
There was a piece that recently just broke the record and sold at Christie’s for a record price, which was a grey box sarcophagus made by a tribe in the Congo.
