Esperanza Spalding at Henry Fonda Theatre
As it so often goes when a deeply talented and deserving artist actually wins a Grammy against shittier, more popular big names, Esperanza Spalding has not instantly become rich or universally popular. This is okay because her music (a rich, sensual jazz-pop that never sacrifices musicianship or jazz integrity on the altar of popular appeal) is probably never going to replace Rihanna on a 15 year old's iPod, but Spalding is indeed a rare talent, a musician with a combination of chops, songwriting and natural personality that doesn't happen often. She brings her equally talented band with her to the former Music Box on Friday. [Details] [via]
