Z-Trip @ Transmission L.A. (Geffen Contemporary at MOCA)
The absolute coolest thing that's been going on in L.A. lately, Transmission is, for the uninitiated, a 17 day audio visual arts festival curated by The Beastie Boys' Mike D. If you need proof of that, go ahead and check out our Instagram recap of the first night, featuring a live show from Santigold. But obviously, Mike D wasn't going to settle for just one dynamic musical performance, which is why he's having mash-up pioneer and perennial contender for World's Best DJ Z-Trip spinning with KCRW's Jeremy Sole, all for no cost at all. But for the love of God, if you want to get in, show up early. [Details]
Ice Cube (KDAY Krush Groove) @ Gibson Ampitheatre
If Dre and Snoop's triumphant Coachella two-night stand has taught us anything, it's that classic rap ages extremely well. This bodes well for KDAY's Krush Groove Festival, a one-night event at Universal City's Gibson Ampitheatre featuring Cypress Hill, Mystikal, The Pharcyde, Ras Kass, and Amerikkka's Most Wanted himself, Ice Cube. Sure, it's easy to point out that he's been more like Disney's Most Wanted over the last decade, but the man is a consummate performer with several of the most classic California gangster rap songs of all time under his belt ("Today Was A Good Day," anyone?), so if he can summon some of that old fire, this will be well worth the price of admission. Hell, if Pharcyde does "Passing Me By," it's pretty much worth it on its own, right? [Z-Trip via, Ice Cube via]
