Superyachts, private jets, Eastern European girls with fake hair and mysterious sources of income - such is the content that has earned eye-rolls and fascination on the seminal Instagram account Rich Kids of Instagram (now known as Rich Kids of the Internet). In the years since @RKOI first hit our feeds (and Tumblrs, remember those?) way back in 2012, it's inspired plenty of offshoots, a television show on E! (unofficially), and an entire culture of excess unto itself (we remember when #fake rich kids started renting private planes just for Instagram purposes, right?). But until recently, no one knew the anthropological chronicler of absurd wealth behind it.
Turns out it's one James McLeod Ison, a 27-year-old Brit who, despite having come from quite the humble background, has leveraged his viral IG account to become a rich kid himself. Self-made, huh?
