Borobudur, Indonesia
Looking like it shared the same engineers as the Aztec and Mayan temples, Borobudur is the largest Buddhism monument in the world. The whole structure is a visual interpretation of Buddhist teachings. What is unique about this temple is that for centuries it was buried under volcanic ash, and was only discovered in 1814 by Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles despite being built in 750 AD. Today, it is an essential destination for Buddhist pilgrimage. [Photo via]
