Roussillon

In the family of Les Plus Beaux Villages, Roussillon is a particular standout for one reason: its color.

Situated in the heart of one of the biggest deposits of ochre in the world, early builders used the terracotta colored clay to construct the buildings in this hilltop town. If you remember your art history, ochre has been used as painting pigments as far back as 75,000 years ago in caves along the southern coast of Africa, through Renaissance frescoes, and in the town of Roussillon.

As a result, the village takes on a dreamy hue. Get lost through its winding streets, and revel in the shades of pink, orange, brown, and gold.
