In the land of interiors. it doesn't get more maximalist and overwhelmingly fabulous than beloved, cult favorite designer, Mario Buatta. Affectionately known as The Prince of Chintz, his penchant for collecting everything from dolphin stemmed tables to paintings of spaniels to cabbage serveware is so vast and elaborate, it really makes you wonder how he managed to store it all between his Upper East Side apartment and Connecticut country home.
Starting January 23rd, Sotheby's will be presenting an epic, can't-miss two-day auction of Buatta's personal pieces. And I mean epic. As Dennis Harrington, the head of English and European furniture at Sotheby's, told Town & Country, “the average auction for a sale like this has between 250 to 300 lots. Mario Buatta has over a thousand.” Over a thousand!
And though the pricing may seem approachable - items ranging from $500 - $50,000 - there will most certainly be no deals had here as all the discerning decorative world will be in attendance, eager to win their share of the lot. Still, a girl can dream. As should you!
