Harlem Hospital

Both on-screen and IRL, Diana made waves when she went to Harlem Hospital to visit children affected by AIDS, embracing them in defiance of the stigma and misinformation held at the time. The New York Times reported that Diana "paused to stroke five babies...[then] the Princess noticed a 7-year-old boy in blue pajamas. 'Are you heavy?' she asked, scooping him up and cuddling him."

The HIV and AIDS crisis was a deeply important issue for the princess throughout her royal career, a fact that, as shown on The Crown, was not so embraced by her in-laws. The queen even reportedly told her, "Why don’t you get involved with something more pleasant?" But Diana did what she wanted, and everyone clearly loved her for it.
