Henry Street Settlement

Of course, Diana always made time for charitable visits when she was in the city. Her 1989 trip included a stop at the Henry Street Settlement, a Lower East Side social service organization that, among other things, offered a self-help program for women that had gone through homelessness or domestic violence. When Diana visited, she spoke with some of the women in the group and met with children in the org's daycare center. "She was just so down to earth," recalled the Henry Street administrator tasked with hosting the princess. "I didn’t have time to get nervous. So she just cut through all my anxiety."

"The whole Lower East Side was just so excited that she was there. She would go outside of where they wanted her to go to say hi to a kid. There was one little girl that had tulips, and Diana just broke the line and went to this kid and said hi."
