Brooklyn Academy of Music

The main event, and reason for her 1989 visit, was indeed the glamorous night at the Brooklyn Academy of Music that is depicted in The Crown. BAM was debuting its first season of the opera, hosting the Welsh company for an inaugural production of Falstaff and a gala reception. Because of her patronage of the Welsh Opera, Diana was invited as the guest of honor. Her name alone caused the $2,000 tickets to sell out (even Donald Trump was in attendance), and when she arrived that evening, says Karen Brooks Hopkins, President Emerita of BAM, "radiant in a magnificent long white dress with a matching bolero jacket covered in jewels, a gasp went up from the crowd. She was — in a word — perfection!"
