When one of the world's finest steak restaurants finally lands in New York City, you can bet that it arrived in style.
Highly acclaimed London-based chophouse Hawksmoor has made its U.S. debut in the historic United Charities Building, a landmarked locale in Gramercy that has been closed to the public for over a century. Built in 1892, the building's lavish interiors have been restored in time for the exciting transatlantic transplant's big opening this month.
Decked out in dark reclaimed wood, emerald green leather booths, and antique finds, the eatery's sophisticated décor effortlessly complements the grandeur of the building's former Assembly Hall-turned-dining room, which boasts a gorgeous 30-foot vaulted ceiling, elaborate crown molding, and stained glass windows.
But while Hawksmoor's first stateside outpost certainly embraces history and heritage, it does, of course, aim to bring something new to the table - literally. Helmed by group executive chef Matt Brown and executive chef Matt Bernero (formerly head chef of Minetta Tavern), the kitchen will be serving up ethically sourced, charcoal-fired meats (Hawksmoor's signature), and dishes that blend British tradition with distinctly New York taste. The menu features Yorkshire Pudding and triple-cooked "chips" as well as dry-aged All-American beef and locally sourced East Coast seafood.
Oh, and you're not going to want to skip the drinks menu - Hawksmoor's cocktails officially earned it the title "Best International Restaurant Bar" at the annual Tales of the Cocktail, and we mean, it has a whole section dedicated to the "New York State of Mind." We'll always toast to that.
