La Newyorkina
As with any great meal, I can only end this list with a sweet treat, and in this case, that treat is La Newyorkina. Owner Fany Gerson grew up in Mexico City with a love for food, especially desserts. After traveling throughout Mexico to further her passion for and understanding of Mexican frozen sweets, she flew to New York to share her secrets - and, more importantly, the sweets themselves: paletas.
Although Fanny expanded the menu from the original five flavors she felt represented Mexico: mango chile, hibiscus, coconut, passion fruit, and avocado, the quality did not falter. All ingredients that don’t grow around New York, like Mexican vanilla beans and Oaxaca chocolate, are imported, so no matter what delicious frozen flavor you choose, you know it’ll be as authentic as the next.
And what is the secret ingredient that makes these treats so sweet? The La Newyorkina team donates a portion of their profits to Crea, an organization that facilitates employment opportunities for low-income women in Mexico by offering training and business development support. So stop by, grab a paleta, and make your day a little sweeter.
