It's no secret that Manhattan real estate is shockingly pricey. Merely looking at listings is not for the faint of heart (or wallet). But nothing we've seen (even in the fanciest of buildings) quite compares to this Upper East Side home, currently set to sell for $80 million, making it New York's most expensive townhouse ever.
The current owners, billionaire Vincent Viola and his wife, purchased the home in 2005 for just $20 mil, when it was broken up into separate apartments and a doctor's office. They've since restored the 20,000-square-foot residence to its gilded, one-family glory, complete with a laundry list of lavish features. Seven bedrooms, six full baths (plus three powder rooms), a 23-foot-long swimming pool, a two-story movie theater, and, obviously, a panic room are all housed inside. The ornate decor and Beauty and the Beast-worthy library just add to its very uptown aesthetic.
If the anonymous buyer signs the contract, the purchase will dethrone The Harkness Mansion, which sold for $53 million in 2006 - to a poor person, we suppose.
