Inside Baz Luhrmann's Glamorous $20 Million Gramercy Park Townhouse

Really, would you expect anything less glamorous or dramatic from the director of Hollywood's most dazzling blockbusters?

Baz Luhrmann purchased his stunning Gramercy Park townhome on East 17th Street back in 2017 for $13.5 million. Originally built in the 1850s, it is the only Anglo-Italianate house on the historic block facing Stuyvesant Square Park that was not originally part of a row of narrow, uniform houses. Stretching five-stories and boasting 6 bedrooms, 5 bathrooms and 2 powder rooms, the massive property just drips with Gilded Age details.

So why is that now the impeccably decorated home has hit the market (for a whopping $19,999,500 asking price)? Well, since the pandemic, it seems the home has just sat empty with Luhrmann and his wife, costume designer Catherine Martin, having been stuck back in their native Australia. 

“We just thought, ‘This is ridiculous,'” Martin told WSJ. “The house has been empty for nearly three years. And somebody should be enjoying it. But it’s breaking our hearts.”
