Ryan McGinley's Yearbook Opening Reception

Ryan McGinleyWhere: Team Gallery Other details: Last night Team Gallery hosted the opening reception for Ryan McGinley's new exhibit Yearbook. The revered photographer covered the walls of Team with hundreds of pictures of nudes in front of a bright colored background (with a few in black and white), his signature style. Even before the gallery officially opened, a crowd of people made their way in to beat the rush and explore the work. People were constantly recognizing people they knew in the photographs, causing a few giggles and some blushing, but also adoration for the photographs. Despite the vent being a refrain from Fashion Week, a few fashion faces still made an appearance. Olivier Zahm of Purple Magazine got there early, snapping pics with his colleague Caroline Gaimari. Another editor, Out Of Order's Dorian Grinspan briefly passed through the increasingly packed space to greet McGinley and offer his congratulations. Mike Nouveau also stopped by with restaurateur Angelo Bianchi, before heading to the Opening Ceremony party. Naturally Brion Isaacs showed up, after recently receiving publicity over nude work in the windows of his own space, Rivington Design House. McGinley himself was swarmed with a crowd of people who were eager to get a word with him. We managed to chat with the artist briefly to hear his perspective on the new show: So this is one of your biggest shows to date. RM: It definitely has the most photos in it, there's over 700 portraits in it. What was the importance of choosing to have no white-space in the walls or ceilings of the gallery? RM: We wanted to go for a sistine chapel vibe, cover the ceiling. What do you think the key to getting people comfortable naked in front of the camera? RM: You just ask. That's it though. You just have to ask. It's like that Morissey song, "Shyness is nice, but shyness will stop you from doing everything in life that you like to do." How do you continue to remain inspired shooting these kinds of minimal photographs? RM: I love connecting with people, and all these people in all these portraits are part of a creative community. Everyone is the whole gamut of DJs, dancers, painters, photographers, actors, musicians, and just for me working with the creative community is exciting. They understand what I'm doing. How does technology affect you as an artist? Basically everyone is a photographer now... RM: I think technology just helps people connect. And the more people are connecting, the better. And I love that people connect through photography. For me it's such a special way [to connect].
