We all know that oft-quoted sentiment - "New York, I love you, but you're bringing me down." It seems to somehow sum up the mish mash of feelings towards this city that have inflicted even the best of us (here's looking at you, Joan Didion). However, many remain unaware that this bittersweet adage comes from the opening lines of an LCD Soundsystem song. James Murphy, their frontman, goes on to croon "New York, I love you, but you're freaking me out." And I think that's beautiful (and slightly more accurate).
On a day-to-day, perhaps hour-to-hour, basis, the wily entity that is NYC constantly throws us the most bizarre curveballs that force our brains to excrete stress hormones that, in turn, render us stereotypically anxious, impatient city folk. Maybe one day we can breathe easy knowing that all of these nightmares are collective. But for now, learn to meditate or get a much-deserved prescription for Xanax before these public nuisances send you over the edge, and you become one yourself.
