The Duke and Duchess of Windsor
Despite scandalizing the world by abdicating the throne to marry American divorcée Wallis Simpson, Britain's Edward VIII and his bride remained the toast of society. Don't ask us why though. So the stories go, the jet-set couple were masters at avoiding a dinner check and had quite the routine down to kill time before one of their guests finally picked up the tab. According to the Duke's biographers, "His dillydallying tactics included staring into the middle distance, whistling a light tune, and drumming his fingers on the table, until one of the guests finally picked up the bill and paid it, as his only hope of getting home before dawn."
