Growing up, a lot of us were painted a pretty picture in regards to relations between the pilgrims and Native Americans around this time of year. As we should all know by now, the real story of settlers in the so-called "New World" was not nearly as peaceful as we were taught.

So while the modern interpretation of Thanksgiving leads us to give thanks and feast, it's important to remember that, today, many indigenous communities are struggling as a result of the colonization behind the history of this holiday. Since Thanksgiving is also an occasion to give back, there's no better time to support the people who were here first.
