1984 in NYC was the wild wild west, I was 17 and AREA in TriBeCa was my clubhouse. Eric Goode and his team (including Serge Becker and Shaun Hausmann) changed the theme every 6 weeks (think Suburbia, Carnival, and The Emperors New Clothes) and regulars included Warhol, Basquiat, and Haring. It felt outlaw and to this day day still informs my design and creative ethos.

In 1985, post-prison and pre-hotels, Steve Rubell and Ian Schrager opened Palladium in an old theater (their specialty). It was the era of Jay McInerney's Bright Lights Big City and the VIP Michael Todd Room on the top level of the gargantuan club had it's own secret alley entrance and was the place to be, where the Beastie Boys, Madonna, and Rudolf Nuryev held court.
