Forget the shame

First, we have to ask ourselves the question, “why am I feeling this?” in order to get some awareness and mindfulness around the issue. I believe it is because of what our social media society projects. I have felt it too. The inspirational quotes around “going within” during this time. The messages about using the time to “build upon yourself,” to meditate, to find strength in developing the inner work, the messaging around a crisis being an opportunity for us to overcome and grow. I found myself, whenever I got comfortable on the couch to watch TV, feeling guilty and shaming myself for not working toward my own mental and spiritual growth or fitness goals. Thinking, if I don’t emerge from this quarantine with six-pack abs and the enlightenment of a bodhisattva - I would be a failure.

Well, shame on shame. The urgency we feel to grow during this time and the guilt of feeling we will have missed the boat if we don’t, is only real if we allow it to be.
