For the History Buff

The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah

Kristin Hannah has a well earned reputation for making her readers cry. Had I known this, I wouldn’t have read this book on a flight to Miami. The Nightingale is hands down the best book I've ever read. It’s the story of female heroines during WWII in Nazi-occupied France. I’ve never met a person who didn’t love this book.

That said, if your friend is a big reader, I’d also consider Pachinko by Min Jin Lee, which is equally amazing, but less widely-read.
