How would you describe your style?
I am extremely eclectic. I ADORE getting dressed up, my mother says I was born in the wrong era. There is NO OCCASION where there isn’t the perfect outfit and I try not to get too campy. My tombstone will say ‘Too Much Is Never Enough’ and I love drama and texture in dressing but you can’t be too literal and I do have to go to work, travel, be in a lot of meetings and run my business so you have to have the right sense about yourself. At home all bets are off! dress for breakfast, hors d’ouevres, dinner, swim, housekeeping! I even have an apron collection!
My favorite stores are Bergdorf Goodman in NY, a Saks Fifth Avenue anywhere, Neiman’s in Palm Beach plus the Church Mouse and Classic Collections there. Many, many others-that is a book!
I do love to mix what I buy at retail with vintage pieces and especially the 70’s and 80s. Not too much of the 60s, it didn’t hold up well and isn’t too wearable. On vintage I try to have a rule that I only buy what I can wear. However I found a terrific Madame Gres dress that will never fit me and it is just on display on a mannequin in my closet-stunning! Just got some great Leonard and Christian LaCroix outfits at Rellick in in London-and really found great things in Paris. That would seem obvious but I’d never shopped vintage there before. I never go anywhere without finding something. And always remember that everyone has a very different definition of ‘vintage’ so if you are seeking it out try to find out as much as possible about the shop before trekking to an out of the way place. And I always go to the store, NEVER online unless I have already visited them. Being there and finding something perfect with your own hands is a TOTAL JOY.
