Most people already accept fashion to be a majorly creative craft; we mean, haute couture in itself garners its own wing of the Metropolitan Museum every year. But it's about time leather jackets were treated with the same respect. A staple of rock stars, rebels, punks, and poets, the leather jacket is the ultimate artist accessory, a veritable masterpiece of clothing. Now, it's finally being recognized as such.
In honor of Barneys new Chelsea flagship, the iconic department store is partnering with Christie's to launch "The Black Leather Jacket" auction, benefiting The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender (LGBT) Center and art-space, White Columns. Up on the block? One-of-a-kind pieces designed by the likes of Alexander Wang, Azzedine Alaia, Isabel Marant, and art world heavyweights including Nate Lowman, Marilyn Minter, and Helmut Lang.
The online auction opens today and runs through March 22nd. Fancy yourself a leather connoisseur? Bid HERE and click through for an up-close look.
