As a veteran personal stylist going on 13 years now, I have seen countless lives changed by simply - drum roll please - cleaning out the closet. While that may seem dramatic, creating space literally also creates space emotionally, which is why the process is usually described to me as “cathartic” and “like a weight off my chest.” Too often, we let things pile up because we have “plenty of space” or we just don’t have the time to think about it. Or maybe we just aren’t sure what’s worth keeping vs. what we can safely toss. We have a fear of not having enough, of not being able to find the right thing in the moment that we need it… but what happens when we hold on to everything, is that we can’t find that “perfect thing” when we actually do need it. We wear clothes out of guilt, or laziness that don’t actually make us feel good, and then we buy more because we feel like we have “nothing to wear.” Sound familiar?
The complaint of having a closet full of clothes and nothing to wear is pretty universal. Believe it or not, the secret to fixing this epidemic does not always mean buying something new. In fact, when it comes to your wardrobe less really IS more because the fewer items you have to choose from the simpler it becomes to get dressed. Just imagine opening your closet and seeing ONLY things that you love, instead of having to dig through dozens of mediocre options only to land on something... mediocre.
Many of my clients come to me already knowing that they want to get rid of a lot, but need the permission to let go of the gift their mother-in-law gave them 5 years ago that they never liked, or the jeans that are honestly never going to fit well anyway. Sometimes it takes a second opinion to see things objectively, when you’re looking at those exact things every single day. And yes, shameless plug, I’m available for hire and I work with clients all over the world. However, if you don’t have access to hiring help, follow these guidelines on what to keep and what to ditch. DM or tag me on Instagram with your “toss” piles and neatly organized closets and happy cleansing!
