Did you know that they world’s very first Christmas tree featuring electric lights was displayed at the home of Edward Hibberd Johnson in Murray Hill all the way back in 1882?
Such is the historic origin of a wonderful neighborhood tradition!
A whole century later, in 1982, Patrons of Park Avenue was born - a committee of the MHNA that's responsible for the maintenance, beautification, and annual lighting of the malls on Park Avenue.
This Sunday, in keeping with their holiday heritage, the Murray Hill Neighborhood Association hosted their annual tree lighting and holiday party, joined by Patrons of Park Avenue, Chabad of Midtown, Metropolitan Synagogue, Church of Our Saviour, Big Apple Chorus, Pershing Square and more.
The festive evening began with lighting the eighth candle of Hannukah on the Chabad of Midtown menorah, and continued with a visit from Sant Claus and the lighting of all the holiday trees along Park Avenue. Guests then warmed up with further holiday celebrations at Pershing Square, including an a cappella performance by Big Apple Chorus.
