This past Saturday marked the return of MAD Luminaries Pride Artist Brunch, a now annual event connecting artists and art enthusiasts to celebrate the wonderful community of queer art, and serve as a reminder that Pride is about far more than just parties and pageantry.
Co-Chairs Alexander Hankin and Timo Weiland lead an exciting panel discussion focused on queer art and activism, with artists Linjie Deng, Sarp Kerem Yavuz, Edward Granger and Shantell Martin sharing their thoughts and perspectives on everything from censorship to politics.
Many moving stories were shared throughout the afternoon. Chinese artist Lenjie Deng told guests of his criminal childhood, having been issues a death certificate upon birth, growing up as his family's hidden secret due to China's one child policy. Edward Granger spoke about the importance of collaboration among queer artists, while Sarp Kerem Yavuz noted the censorship of his exhibitions in his home country of Turkey.
The event was attended by over 70 guests including Amit Greenberg, Luminaries Co-Chair Chrstina Senia, Joey Spieczney, Lexi Ench, Jack Serio, Paula Sanders, Casey Kohlberg, Brian Tran, Preston Nicholas, Zach Beloff, Zach Miller, and Justin Grabell. Sponsorship was also made possible by Della Vita Prosecco, Betty Buzz, and Alb Vodka.
