Hillary Clinton, Meryl Streep & More Celebrate 100 Years Of Planned Parenthood

Last night, Pier 36 was covered in arches of pink balloons in celebration of Planned Parenthood’s 100th Anniversary birthday party, drawing over a thousand guests spanning Hollywood stars, Capitol Hill dynasts, and fashion industry notables. The evening also served to honor none other than our former Democratic presidential nominee, Hillary Clinton (yes, we’re #StillWithHer) with the Champion of the Century Award, and Shonda Rhimes with the Champion for Change Award.

The evening commenced with a cocktail hour, serving signature drinks titled “Toxic Masculinity” (boy, bye!) and vibrant light bites like mini pink tacos. Guests mingled among works of art that were slated to be auctioned off later that night (FYI, Harvey Weinstein and Scarlett Johansson got into a bidding war over a few!).

Other star-studded guests in attendance like Meryl Streep, America Ferrara, Scarlett Johansson, Michael Bloomberg, Chelsea Handler, Tina Fey, Julianne Moore, Hannah Bronfman, Diane von Furstenberg, Halsey, and Christian Siriano, filled the room to celebrate women and the fervent commitment of this agency and their centennial. It goes without saying, Planned Parenthood has some of the most stylish supporters.

Following the cocktail, dinner was served and Chelsea Handler kicked off the evening with her usual sarcasm and wit. In between shading the incumbent of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, she reminded guests that Planned Parenthood isn’t just for “liberal New Yorkers, or famous celebrities, or troublemaking women…Men and women across the country appreciate the fact that this organization serves all patients no matter what.”

Meryl Streep took the stage after the second course and in Meryl Streep fashion, responded to her roaring applause with a high-kick. She presented Shonda Rhimes with the Champion for Change Award, praising her for her vigor and for “putting strong, empowered women at the center of her stories for a long time”; specifically, Scandal’s Olivia Pope, noting that she is a character “capable of anything from electing a president to fighting off terrorists.”

Introduced by Planned Parenthood CEO Cecile Richards, Hillary Clinton took the podium and the room refused to simmer – she went on to deliver a powerful 20 minute speech sharing her experience with the organization, as well as her encounters with women all over the country that rely on their services. In Hillary’s closing remarks, she shared, “I believe, as you do, that trusting and valuing women is the right and moral position to take,” affirming proudly that women’s rights are in fact human rights.

The birthday party was far from over, as Questlove kicked off a disco dance party that had the entire room on their feet.
