Nayland Blake, Mineshaft

You might miss this work if you don’t venture outside the museum to see it. Against the outside wall of the museum facing the West Side Highway is Blake’s Mineshaft. He has recreated a late '70s, early '80s gay club that existed in the Meatpacking District, a replica of its former façade. Blake placed the work facing Day’s End (2021) by David Hammons, another reference to queer history in New York. Blake’s work, along with Hammons', spotlights an important time in Queer history and recalls what has been erased.
