Pie Sisters opened earlier this month, and there has been a steady stream of customers hungry for the fresh pies baked by the three Blakely sisters, Alli, Erin and Cat. We stopped by the adorable shop yesterday for National Pie Day to get all the gossip on Georgetown's sweetest new addition.

The Blakely sisters grew up in Great Falls, where they learned how to bake pies and can fruits from their mom. Before college, the girls attended Langley High School, Paul VI, and Bishop O'Connell, and today, all three of them live in Georgetown.
Although a large majority of their customers have been Georgetown business owners and Georgetown University professors and students, they had a surprise visit the other day from a Copperthithe pie heir.
[Copperthithe Baking Shop. Photo via] The Copperthithe Pie Company was the second largest employer (15,000) in Georgetown during the early 1900s, and baked 50,000-60,000 pies a day at their peak, and even delivered some pies to the White House.
The girls keep a vintage photo of the old Georgetown Copperthithe bakery, which was on the corner of Wisconsin and M, in their shop. Looks to me like it was where Benetton is today.
I got to sample their coconut cream pie "cuppie" and their pumpkin pie "cuppie," and they were so good--the crust was crispy, and the coconut cream was light and smooth. Georgetown senior Alex Kloppenburg has tried all of them, and said, "they're all amazing."
Cuppies are pies that are small enough to "cup" in your hand, and go for $4 a piece. They also sell 7" and 9" pies that can be custom made with letter and shape cutouts to your liking. The 9" pie comes in a glass dish (which you can return for $5 off your next purchase).
The Blakely sisters could sell 50,000 cuppies and pies a day here pretty soon, not unlike the other sweet sister team a few blocks up M at Georgetown Cupcake.
Pie sisters is located at the mouth of Key Bridge in Georgetown, at 3423 M Street NW. It is open everyday except Monday from 11am-7pm.
And yes, I will be bringing my own little posse, the Pyle Sisters, to Pie Sisters one day soon.
