When Alex Garland penned the cult hit (and bible for backpackers) The Beach, he was smart enough to direct the attention away from his real source of inspiration, in fear that it will become what Thailand has become today: a Mecca for people trying to reenact the quest for paradise popularized in his novel. The lesser known secret, however, is that the beach Alex Garland wrote about isn’t in Thailand. It is in the Philippines, in a pristine cluster of islands that make up a place called Palawan. Ariara Island is one of the many islands in Palawan, and its rustic simplicity and impeccable service make it a fantastic getaway. As the whole island can only accommodate 18 guests at any one time, you truly feel that you are on a deserted island with direct access to five star amenities.
