Mad Men
Mad Men has been on hiatus for over a year, and though the show is returning to AMC this March, Mad Men fans have been forced to turn elsewhere for more insight into the characters, history and fashion of their favorite show. In
Mad Men Unbuttoned: A Romp Through 1960’s America, author Natasha Vargas-Cooper presents a profile of all of the characters in the show, and also introduces us to Leo Burnett—the real advertising exec upon which Don Draper was based.
She doesn’t stop at the characters, though, providing details and history on the social mores (sex, drinking, and smoking,) and pop culture references made on the show.
If you’re more interested in the show’s wardrobe department than anything else, read
The Fashion File: Advice, Tips and Inspiration from the Costume Designer of Mad Men by Janie Bryant and Monica Corcoran Harel. Written, as the title suggest, by the costume designer of Mad Men, this book gives pointers that will have even the most sartorially-challenged channeling Betty or Joan in no time.
