Sundance Survives Snow & Protests With Love & Liquor

by Elina Mishuris · January 25, 2011

Judge it as you will, but Sundance holds its glamorous place as the year's first film festival.  It's not our answer to Cannes, exactly, but for decades now, freezing in Utah in early January has been the greatly preferred alternative to freezing anywhere else.

Go HERE for more photos by Andrew Katz, and tag yourself and your friends.

Names have been made here: Tarantino, Soderbergh, Aronofsky, Jarmusch; behemoths-to-be unleashed: the first SAW, Clerks, Napoleon Dynamite...(Sundance can be used for good and for evil). This year has been no different, with the arrival of hotly anticipated features like Matthew Chapman's "The Ledge," Sean Durkin's "Martha Marcy May Marlene," and Sam Levinson's "The Untitled Sam Levinson Project."

Emily Mortimer, Zooey Deschanel, and Elizabeth Banks huddling for warmth in that cruel, cruel Park City winter.

Kevin Smith's RED STATE (sex in Middle America! Who's ever heard of such a thing?) inspires a protest...and a counter-protest! We can get behind this guy's excellent use of Post-Its, if nothing else.

Actor Gino Cafarelli and friends on the warpath! Or with their beer loot, on the run?

Director Sean Durkin with Sarah Paulson and Elizabeth Olson, who star in his new cult-family-drama MARTHA MARCY MAY MARLENE.
