The President's Decision
President Francois Hollande, who was elected last May, promised to extend the right to marry and to adopt to same-sex couples during his campaign. His Cabinet has approved a draft bill that is expected to go before the National Assembly and Senate very soon, and it is likely to be voted on sometime this month. He hopes that this bill will be a milestone in social reform and a key piece of legislation with his name on it - it would also help to detract from the current fiscal crisis.
