Cushioning
Let me just say here that these are getting worse and worse. Cushioning is the term used to describe the familiar practice of keeping a few potential suitors around, while you're in a relationship, to "cushion" the blow in case things don't work out. So if you're getting really mixed vibes from your cute co-worker who you know has a girlfriend, this explains it.
