Well here's a surefire way to get eliminated on a competition-based reality show: bring up the host's very embarrassing in-laws and make her squirm on national television. Yeesh.
In case you missed it, Project Runway has been resurrected for quite some time now, with Karlie Kloss standing in as the new Heidi Klum. Kloss, as we all know, is married to Joshua Kushner, brother of Jared, who is wed to Ivanka Trump - a fact that goes largely unaddressed by (but is obviously awkward as hell for) the supermodel who runs in liberal fashion circles and has been known to march in a protest or two against her sister-in-law's father's administration. But, despite reportedly starting their relationship off on an unpleasant note, Kloss and the Kushners publicly keep things civil these days (Ivanka, for her part, seems to be the one more eager to remind people of their ties, but I digress).
However, on last night's episode of the Bravo show, one contestant seemed to seriously hit a nerve when he brought up Kloss's husband's family. Tyler Neasloney, who had been tasked with designing an ensemble for Kloss to wear in Paris, was told by judge Brandon Maxwell, "I cannot see Karlie wearing it anywhere, honestly." In an attempt to defend his look, Neasloney responded, "Not even to dinner with the Kushners?" Though it could have been an innocent remark about his design being appropriate to wear with in-laws in general, it certainly did not go over well.
Gasps and shocked expressions filled the room, and Kloss, visibly pissed, told him to "keep it to the challenge" before verbally tearing his creation to shreds. Needless to say, Neasloney, who was already on the chopping block, went home. He did apologize to Kloss later, saying, "Karlie, I want you to know that I'm not a jerk. I'm professional, so what I said earlier had no hidden agenda, no meaning." Perhaps it didn't, and the fact that Kloss took the mere mention of the Kushner name as an insult reveals more about her feelings about them than Neasloney's. Then again, I'd be mad too if someone reminded me I married into that family.
Watch the scene below:
one of the #ProjectRunway designers invoked "The Kushners" last night while defending his design and this is the face Karlie Kloss made.
