Mari Vanna

4. Mari Vanna
Mari Vanna was once incredibly exclusive to the public up until its opening in 2009. The decor suggests the private nature of this restaurant as diners feel like they are walking into someone's home when entering the Gramercy Park establishment. Eater described Mari Vanna best as being "in an upscale Russian home." The restaurant is lined with shelves that hold old Russian treasures like nesting "matroshka" dolls, pots, decorative plates, books, and vodka. Diners, behold, a Russian oasis short of being a distant babooshka's summer estate and very close to one of the best NYC dining secrets yet. Mari Vanna offers a great selection of vodka choices perfect to go with a side of herring, oysters, or if you are feeling extra festive, crab cake in red caviar sauce. We recommend: Braised Duck Leg with Mashed Potato. Mari Vanna, 41 East 20th St (and Park Ave South), 212-777-1955, www.marivanna.ru [Photos via]
