12 East 69th Street: $88 Million
Owned by billionaire Vincent Viola, this Gilded Age mansion was once (as in, last year) set to break records as NYC's most expensive townhouse ever sold when a buyer was eyeing it for $80 million. However, the deal fell through, and the title went to a home a few blocks away, which sold for $90 mil back in February. You can't win 'em all. Nevertheless, the 19-room, 20,000-square-foot home, which features an ornate library, a 23-foot-long swimming pool, a two-story movie theater, and, obviously, a panic room, is back in the game at $88 million.
