[All photos by Nick Hunt for PMc] Claire Danes, Jack Black, and Meryl Streep all attended the opening of "Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson", which uses song, fog, haze, and strobe effects to tell the story of America's Seventh President. Naturally. The play stars Benjamin Walker, who just happens to be engaged to Ms.Streep's daughter, Mamie Gummer.-
Other opening night attendees included Jesse Eisenberg (of a certain Facebook movie...), Philip Seymour Hoffman, and The Public Theater's Oskar Eustis.
A "Jesus Christ Superstar"-ish life-story of Andrew Jackson may seem like a weird way to spend an evening, but famously curmudgeony theater critic Ben Brantley gave the show rave reviews, opening today's piece in the NY Times with:
"Ladies and gentlemen, the seventh president of the United States is here to take a firsthand look at you the people, and he thinks you're really hot. You feel the same way about him, right? You're going to shake, rattle and roll when he makes you the ultimate promise, the one you truly want to hear from anyone who aspires to lead your nation: He solemnly swears to give you the best sex you've ever had."
