Over 30 years after Meg Ryan moaned into her turkey sandwich, Katz's Deli is having a certified "hot girl" resurgence. As are other iconic old school Jewish institutions of the like, Bon Appétit recently noted.
Not that the Bagel-and-Lox lifestyle has ever gone out of style - consider the brunch wait at Major Food Group's nouveau Jew-ish rendition Sadelle's or the forever-fanfare surrounding Upper West Side staple Zabar's - but this year saw delicatessens become especially chic, launching a cultural wave that the New York media set has collectively coined "delicore."
Katz's, for one, played host to a whole slew of fashionistas in the spring for Vogue's "Last Friday in April" bash preceding the Met Gala, as well as a "secret" after-hours rave featuring a DJ set by Diplo in August.
Similarly, a New York Fashion Week presentation by It Designer Batsheva Hay brought the style set out to Ben's Kosher Deli, where models donning bold frocks strutted between booths at the 50-year-old establishment.
Throw in some actual delicore merch, such as Coach's coveted collection celebrating Zabar's or Jake Gyllenhaal's hoodie collab with Russ & Daughters and you've certainly got a trend.
And finally, now that Nicholas Braun (a.k.a. Cousin Greg) has gotten involved with the Eisenberg's lunch counter reincarnation, S&P, we can only posit that the fangirls who usually follow him around at Ray's will soon be flocking in for pastrami sandwiches and their own hopeful Meg Ryan moment.
