Yesterday, in honor of the beginning of Pride Month, Americans gathered together from coast to coast to celebrate the LGBTQ community with festivities, concerts, and parades.
Today, however, is a more somber day for the community, as well as our nation as a whole, as we commemorate the one year anniversary of the Pulse Nightclub shooting in Orlando, Florida. 49 were killed and 58 others were injured at the club, making it the biggest mass shooting in U.S. history.
The Stonewall Inn over on Christopher Street is holding a memorial rally in honor of the victims and the gay community from 7 to 9 tonight. Instead of this being a somber occasion, they're hoping to make it a vindicating, celebratory one. The event envisions "a flash mob of people flowing throughout the streets ultimately gathering to mourn the victims, celebrate our community, and demand our spaces remain safe from homophobia and gun violence." Even if you can't make it, Mayor de Blasio and Governor Cuomo will be live-streaming the events from their respective offices' websites.
In the face of hatred and bigotry, we need love now more than ever. Be sure to stop by the historic Stonewall Inn tonight to demonstrate unity with the LGBTQ community!
