The Metropolitan Club

You can still find members of the upper crust rubbing elbows within the grandiose walls of the Metropolitan Club today, nearly 130 years after the building was originally erected on Fifth Avenue's Millionaire's Row.

The gentleman's club was formed in 1891 by the most prominent power brokers in town, including Cornelius Vanderbilt, William C. Whitney, Frank K. Sturgis, and J. Pierpont Morgan (who served as the club's first president). Each member contributed $5,000 to fund what would become their luxurious clubhouse, designed by the now-infamous architect Stanford White.

From society fundraising to black tie balls, not much has changed at the club - save for the fact that (gasp!) women are now allowed to join.
