After growing up in Hollywood, True moved to New York to attend NYU's Gallatin School of Individualized Study, where she studied screenwriting and songwriting. "My whole life, I’ve seen different aspects of film," she told W magazine in 2018. "My dad writes sometimes, and obviously he’s more of an actor or director, but I’ve always been more into the writing side, behind the scenes."
