C.K.G. Billings' Black Tie Dinner On Horseback, 1903
Another shining moment during New York's Gilded Age, social schmoozer C.K.G. Billings threw a legendary dinner party that we're still trying to emulate. A black tie meal - on horseback. 'Twas only fitting as a toast to his new $200,000 stables, although the location was indeed surprising. Like Hyde's costume ball, Billings' bash was held at Sherry's, but the inside was transformed to look like a woodland scene. Thirty-six guests sat on grand horses with saddlebags filled with iced bottles of champagne and attached trays to eat their courses.
