McSorley's Old Ale House

McSorley's Old Ale HouseThe oldest Irish tavern in NYC, McSorley's was also one of the last "Men Only" pubs, admitting women eventually in 1970.   Historical paraphernalia cover the walls (including Houdini's handcuffs!) and the motto "Good Ale, Raw Onions and No Ladies" still applies to the good beer and onions, which come on a cheese platter. Literary patrons include Joseph Mitchell, E.E. Cummings and Brendan Behan, and two U.S. presidents, Abraham Lincoln and Teddy Roosevelt. Address: 15 E 7th Street [Photo via @caitlinnallison]
