3. Oaxaca, Mexico

The birthplace of mezcal, Oaxaca is one of the most culturally-rich states in Mexico. That diversity and heritage bring a unique appeal to the dining and drinking culture in Oaxaca City, the capital of the same name. But it’s perhaps the growing global love for mezcal, the smoky, grassy agave spirit, that has put the entire state of Oaxaca on the map internationally. Take for example the primarily word-of-mouth Mezcal Amores Experience, a weekend pilgrimage for the jet set that takes place in a rural agave field. Live bands, techno DJs, and a laser light show (until well after sunrise) are to be expected.
