Ah, the early aughts. The age of low-rise jeans, reinvented pop stars, and, if you were anyone who was anyone in New York, Suede lounge.
A favorite of Justin Timberlake, Nelly, and Leonardo DiCaprio back in the day, Suede was the go-to for celebs in the city. Joey Fatone even hosted a weekly party on Tuesdays. Its closing was the end of an era, but now it's set to return as Jasper's Regret - with a noted abuser at the helm. Because we just can't have good things.
The proprietors of the renamed spot include industry vet Nick Bodor (who ran now-shuttered Lower East Side rock club Cake Shop for over a decade) and Ray LeMoine - you know, Lindsay Lohan's friend who attacked Barron Hilton in Miami that one time? The former New York Times blogger is also the dude responsible for those ire-inducing "Yankees Suck" t-shirts, but last year his reputation went from somewhat notorious to downright disgusting.
LeMoine spent some time on Rikers after, what he claims, was an incident involving scalping tickets in 2003. According to Deadspin, however, his court records also include three cases of assault and harassment involving an ex-girlfriend. He was charged with third-degree assault, second-degree harassment, attempted third-degree assault, and second-degree aggravated harassment. Details from the police report are horrifying. Between October 2016 and February 2017, LeMoine is accused of throwing his ex into a wall, shoving her out of a car, striking her in the face, and sending emails threatening to kill her.
What. The. Fuck.
While Jasper's Regret (named for the artist Jasper Johns who once resided across the street at the Chelsea Hotel) is gaining buzz as a potential fashion week hot spot, the truth about its owner should be reason enough to avoid it.
