There is no rock band more definitive of New York City than The Velvet Underground. Led by Lou Reed (with a famous but brief appearance by German-born It Girl Nico), the group was a staple of the downtown art scene, their avant-garde sound serving as the ideal soundtrack for Andy Warhol's factory in the 1960s; the artist, who also managed them for a time, had them as his studio's house band.
Now, five years after the death of its iconic frontman, The Velvet Underground is being honored with an immersive, multi-media exhibition in the city where it came to be.
The Velvet Underground Experience, which originally debuted in Paris in 2016, is heading to NYC this fall. Featuring films, portraits, live concerts, photographs, a musical workshop, and a VR experience, the pop-up promises an intimate look into the rise of the influential band.
Running from October 10th to December 30th, The Velvet Underground Experience will be housed in a 12,000-square-foot space at 718 Broadway. Tickets go on sale today!
