What was one of the most surprising things, for you, to come out of working on the film? Did you have any ideological ah-ha moments?

We knew that we wanted to hire primarily women and then did just that - we had a 70% female crew, and all female department heads. But I have to say that I was still surprised by the amazing experience that so many of those women expressed to me about working on the film. We’re just not used to hearing that in Hollywood. Many of them reached out afterward to say how inspired and empowered they felt, how rare it was that we had no drama on set, finished each day on time, and put women first.

As for an “ah-ha!” moment, it happened during filming when I realized that some of Tina’s insecurities had pushed some of my own buttons. Deep down, I can sometimes feel like I’m not a good enough mother just because I only have one child. Society puts so many stupid pressures on us, and sadly we as women condemn each other for the choice to have only one or, gasp!, none at all. Aaaaand... there we are, right back at the fact that none of us have any idea what it's like to live anyone else’s life.
