Howard got his start on light-hearted sitcoms, starring as Opie Taylor on The Andy Griffith Show and as Richie Cunningham on the sitcom Happy Days.
His directorial career started in 1977 with the film Grand Theft Auto. He would go on to direct such commercially successful films as Splash, Apollo 13, and The Da Vinci Code.
