The young actor became a household name after his radio broadcast of War of the Worlds in 1938 which left many listeners convinced that the world was indeed ending. Even though Welles had never made a feature length film before, he managed to secure a two-film contract with RKO which gave him full artistic license over the cast, crew, and script. This deal yielded Citizen Kane (1941), which is still commonly ranked as the greatest Hollywood film of all time...not bad for a first time out!
